What is a Citizen?

A citizen has a variety of roles. In choosing to be a citizen of a country, one accepts the role the government feels is appropriate for a citizen to be in.
For instance, I believe a citizen should be respectful of the laws put in place by the legislative government. Citizens do not necessarily have to agree with the laws, but they should respect them none the less. If citizens are not satisfied with the laws in place, they should peacefully protest, to let the government know they should be changed. Citizens should use their right to protest, as long as they don’t hurt anyone.
Citizens should also be aware of the laws and political actions that are being made on their behalf, and be active in politics of the nation, whether it is by voting or running as a politician.
Citizens should always look for ways to positively impact the world around them, whether it is by supporting charities, volunteering their time, or any other activity that enhances the quality of life of others. Citizens should be always searching for a way to help those who are not in a position to help themselves.
The ideal citizen would respect others and their property, and accept other viewpoints that differ from their own. Citizens should embrace diversity, and realize that diversity is what strengthens a nation.
